About Self-Funding

Basically, under a traditional fully insured plan, the insurer keeps the profits if there are no medical claims or few claims. Under a self insured health plan, the employer receives all or part of the employer owned account when claims are below the account balance.

When claims exceed the employers account balance, the insurance company pays all eligible claims for the reminder of the calendar year.

Additionally, self-funded plans are not subject to many of the state mandates which drive up the cost of health care.
